Rajya Sabha adjourned as opposition MPs demand discussion on farm laws

After boycotting the Presidential address Congress-led opposition in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday strongly pressed for the discussion on the farmers’ issue compelling the chairman Venkaiah Naidu to adjourn the Upper House for four times–the last time for the day.

Now the House will sit at 9:00 AM on Wednesday morning.

The opposition members belonging to the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal and BSP gave notices seeking suspension of all businesses and demanding discussion on the issue related to farmers’ agitation.

However, the Chairman of the House said that it was brought to his notice that as per the convention the issue can be first debated by the Lok Sabha and thus it could only be taken up on Wednesday. He said that the Business Advisory Committee of the House has been informed in this regard.

The opposition members created ruckus at least three times and on the fourth time they staged walk-out forcing Naidu at 1:05 PM to adjourn the House for the day.

In the post-corona days, the Upper House functions between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM and the Lok Sabha between 4:00 and 9:00 PM.

It needs to be mentioned that 19 opposition parties also abstained from the Presidential address to the joint sitting of the Budget Session on January 29.

The Lok Sabha too started on a stormy note on Tuesday evening.
