Former President Pranab Mukherjee expires at 84

Former President Pranab Mukherjee passed away on Monday at Delhi’s Army Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for various diseases. The former President was admitted to the hospital on 10th of August where he had also undergone surgery for the removal of clot in his brain. His health deteriorated this morning.

Pranab Mukheerjee served as 13th President of India between 2012 and 2017. He was conferred with Bharat Ratna, the  highest civilian award of the country last year. Before elected President Pranab Mukherjee held key cabinet portfolios such as Defence, External Affairs and Finance in successive Congress governments.

His son and former M.P. Abhijit Mukherjee informed about his death. He tweeted, “With a Heavy Heart , this is to inform you that my father Shri PranabMukherjee has just passed away inspite of the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital & prayers, duas & prarthanas from people throughout India ! I thank all of You.”

The news of demise of the former President  triggered an out pour of condolence messages from people of all walks of life. President Ram Nath Kovind condoling the death tweeted: Sad to hear that former President Shri Pranab Mukherjee is no more. His demise is passing of an era. A colossus in public life, he served Mother India with the spirit of a sage. The nation mourns losing one of its worthiest sons. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a series of tweets remembered the help he has got after being elected as PM from the then President Pranab Mukherjee. PM termed him ‘scholar par excellence’ and ‘a towering statesman’.
