Congress Working Committee decided to keep interim Congress president Sonia Gandhi at the party’s helm till a new chief is elected in AICC session which will be held as per convenience. Earlier, Mrs Gandhi had requested the CWC to begin the process of transition so as to relieve her from the responsibility of party presidency.
Meanwhile Congress president appeared leaving behind the controversy which has erupted after 23 senior leaders wrote a letter to overhaul the functioning of the party. In her closing remarks Mrs Gandhi reportedly said that she doesn’t hold anything against those who have written the letter.
In the conclusion of CWC meeting, the Congress Working Committee adopted a resolution which appreciates the role of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi for being on the forefront of exposing the government’s failure in last six month. “The CWC, reflecting the overwhelming views and desire of the rank and file of the Congress, unanimously resolved to strengthen the hands of Smt. Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in every possible way,” Senior Congress K C Venugopal briefed media after the meeting.
Earlier, media reports suggested that the Congress Working Committee meeting started on a stormy note on Monday morning with upset Sonia and angry Rahul expressing their strong displeasure over the way the letter was written and leaked in the media.
In all 23 senior party leaders were the signatories of the letter. They include Ghulam Nabi Azad, Kapil Sibal, Shashi Tharoor, Anand Sharma etc. Reports also said that both Sonia and Rahul loyalists in Congress were not happy with the way the letter was written and leaked in the media.
If Sonia and Rahul have certainly lashed out at the top leaders of the party, as TV channels had reported it was something unprecedented. It was only after this that Sibal tweeted that he had at no point of time colluded with the BJP.
