Indian women’s hockey team scripted history by reaching the semifinal after beating Australian 1-0 in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics on Monday. This will be the maiden outing for the women’s team in the semifinal. On Sunday, the Men’s hockey team had secured the semifinal berth.

In a very closely fought match against the strong Australia, Indian players rose to the occasion and performed according to the plan. Gurjit Kaur converted the only penalty corner into the goal in the twenty second minute of the first half. While experienced goalkeeper Savita excelled with two good saves as Indian defenders deflected seven Australian penalty corners.

It was a strong comeback by the women’s in blue as in the beginning they had to suffer back to back three big defeats from Netherland (1-5), Germany (0-2) and Great Britain (1-4).

However, after that team India kept the hope alive by defeating Ireland and South Africa to secure a quarter final spot. The team will be full of confidence after stunning the Aussies. A win in semi final will establish Indian women’s hockey in the world arena.
